How to change a cloth diaper

Changing a cloth diaper is just as simple as with a disposable - you only need a little practice and the right gear. A clean and safe changing area, a fresh diaper, wipes for cleaning and a container for soiled diapers all help.

Step by step

1. Remove the soiled diaper and place it in a container or waterproof wet bag.
2. Gently clean the bottom with water and a cloth wipe or a pad.
3. Place a fresh diaper under the child.
4. Fasten the diaper securely - with hook-and-loop, snaps or a Snappi fastener.
5. Store the soiled diaper properly until washing.

Check the fit

There should be at least one finger's width of space between the diaper and the skin. Make sure the elastics sit snugly around the legs and waist, as this prevents leaks. If red marks appear on the skin, the diaper may be too tight.

A few tips

• Use creams free of mineral oils and fish oils, as these reduce the absorbency of diapers.
• Wash diapers within two to three days according to the maker's instructions.
• For exclusively breastfed babies, pre-rinsing is not essential - the stool is water-soluble.
